For over 50 years, the ministry of Teen Challenge has been a beacon of hope, transforming the lives of drug addicts and alcoholics worldwide. From New York City, Teen Challenge spread across America, where there are now more than 200 centers. As time went by, more and more centers began to open overseas. Today there is a network of over 1,000 Teen Challenge centers in more than eighty countries, including Russia, Angola, Ethiopia, Portugal, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Kazakhstan and Serbia. We feel it is time to include the Philippines to that ever-growing list of countries.
The Philippines is quickly becoming one of the main avenues for drug trafficking. The illicit drug market has successfully gained in-roads to subcultures of users, collegiate life, and deep into the bowels of Philippine rural life, which is escalating into a raging epidemic of drug addiction. While there are no hard, fast statistics currently available, it is estimated that as many as 60,000 young men in the Philippines are dealing with drug addiction. Shabu, a powerfully addictive methamphetamine stimulant, is the drug of choice to over 90% of Filipino drug users. In a survey conducted by the University of the Philippines, 60% or 5.3 million Filipino youth are drinking alcoholic beverages on a regular basis. In fact, there are more alcoholic drinkers than smokers.
